Ski Mums: A Taos Ski Weekend Getaway

There’s family travel… and then there’s the kind of trip where you walk out the door without a backpack full of snacks, spare gloves, emergency wipes, and a mental countdown to nap time.

Enter: Ski Mums Weekend — a long weekend dedicated to charging ski laps with your best friends, hiking for untouched snow, lingering over après, and actually finishing a conversation.

This year’s adventure brought us to the high desert mountains of Taos, where ski days at Taos Ski Valley were balanced with deep relaxation at Ojo Caliente Mineral Springs Resort & Spa.

The result? The perfect 3–5 day adults-only getaway — whether you’re traveling with your best girlfriends, your partner, or a crew of adventure-loving friends.

Why Taos Works So Well for an Adults’ Ski Weekend

Travel Reality Check

Taos is just enough effort to feel like an adventure — but still manageable for a long weekend escape from the Bay Area.

  • Fly from San Francisco International Airport to Santa Fe Regional Airport

  • Expect a layover

  • Drive approximately 2 hours from Santa Fe to Taos

  • Arrive in time for dinner and mountain views

Would I do this exact itinerary with toddlers? Probably not.

Would I recommend it for adults craving a mix of adventure, relaxation, and elevated après? Absolutely.

Day 1: Travel Day + Taos Arrival

After landing in Santa Fe, grab a rental car and make the scenic drive north toward Taos. The route winds through dramatic desert landscapes before opening into snow-covered mountain views that instantly signal: weekend mode activated.

Recommended Plan

  • Flight from SFO → Santa Fe

  • Pick up rental car

  • Drive to Taos

  • Check into lodging

  • Casual dinner and early bedtime before ski days begin

Day 2: Ski Taos + West Basin Ridge Hike

This was hands-down the best ski day of the trip.

Despite otherwise dry bluebird conditions, the hike from Lift 2 to West Basin Ridge delivered some of the best snow and vertical on the mountain.

Don’t Miss

  • Hike from Lift 2 → West Basin Ridge

  • Ski Wild West Glade

  • Long cruisers and advanced terrain with incredible views

Taos has a rugged, old-school ski culture that feels refreshingly different from many larger Colorado resorts. Less glam, more grit — in the best possible way.

Lunch Stop: The Bavarian

Located near Lift 4, The Bavarian is the perfect mid-mountain reset.

Think:

  • Warm drinks

  • Hearty ski-day food

  • Relaxed mountain atmosphere

  • Exactly the kind of lunch that turns into après

Dinner: 192 at The Blake

Dinner at 192 at The Blake felt like the perfect “level up” from ski gear and beer-filled après.

A little elevated.
A little cozy.
Still relaxed enough to keep the mountain vibe alive.

Day 3: More Skiing + Casual Taos Evening

Day three was all about soaking in more mountain time without rushing an agenda.

Some groups may want:

  • More hiking laps

  • Groomer cruising

  • A long après session

  • Shopping or exploring downtown Taos

Dinner at Rhoda’s

For a more casual final ski-night dinner, Rhoda's Restaurant & Lounge delivered the cozy, relaxed atmosphere we wanted after full days on the mountain.

After multiple ski days, driving to Ojo Caliente Mineral Springs Resort & Spa felt like entering another world.

This is where the trip shifts from adventure getaway to full-body reset.

What We Loved

  • Multiple mineral soaking pools

  • Quiet desert atmosphere

  • Slow mornings and long dinners

  • Spa treatments and massages

  • Space to truly unwind

Pro Tip

Book massages well in advance — appointments fill quickly.

Dinner at Artesian Restaurant

End the evening with dinner at the resort’s Artesian Restaurant for a relaxed, cozy meal before one final soak under the stars.

Day 5: Yoga + Slow Morning + Flight Home

Before heading home:

  • Join the complimentary mindful morning yoga session

  • Squeeze in one final soak

  • Grab coffee for the drive back to Santa Fe

The timing worked perfectly for a same-day return home — ideally just in time to tuck the kids into bed feeling refreshed, recharged, and already planning next year’s Ski Mums weekend.

Final Thoughts

This Taos itinerary delivered the ideal combination of:

  • Adventure

  • Great skiing

  • Relaxation

  • Elevated dining

  • Desert spa energy

  • Quality time with friends

For parents especially, weekends like this are more than a vacation — they’re a reset button.

And honestly? That makes coming home even sweeter.
