Kid-Friendly Guide to San Luis Obispo & Avila Beach (3-Day Itinerary)

San Luis Obispo holds a special place in our hearts—Dave and I both went to Cal Poly (even though fate waited until a Tahoe ski lease to finally introduce us). Before kids, our SLO weekends were a rotation of wineries, hikes, beach days, and late nights downtown.

Enter: family life. The itinerary has officially shifted from tasting rooms + nightlife to bike paths + playgrounds. And honestly? We love it just as much.

If you’re looking for a kid-friendly, bike-friendly, beach-forward long weekend in SLO County, Avila Beach is our go-to home base. Here’s exactly how we structure a 3-day trip that works for young kids, naps, and still gives the adults some fun.

Why We Stay in Avila Beach (vs. Downtown SLO or Pismo)

Avila isn’t the best surf beach, but it wins for family travel:

✅ Flat, kid-safe bike trail (Bob Jones Trail)
✅ Walkable restaurants with outdoor seating
✅ Farm animals + tractor rides nearby
✅ Calm, family beach with swings and a playground right on the sand
✅ Easy to get back to the hotel for naps / melt-downs / snacks

It’s the perfect blend of “vacation mode” and “parenting reality.”

3-Day Family-Friendly Avila Beach Itinerary

Day 1: Surfing + Beach Play Day

If no one surfs: Stay in Avila all day—beach, swings, ice cream, stroller-friendly boardwalk.
If someone surfs: Drive 5–10 min to one of these:

Beach Best For Kid Friendly? Notes
Shell Beach Short-board waves, rocky beach ✅ Yes Cliffs, stairs down, less crowded
Pismo Beach Learning to surf, sand play ✅ Yes Huge sandy beach, bathrooms, snack shops

Tip: Pack sand toys + hoodies + wet suit. The marine layer is real here.

Day 2: Bike Ride to Avila Valley Barn + Afternoon Beach Time

This is our favorite kid-approved combo activity: movement + animals + built-in nap break.

🚲 Morning: Bike the Bob Jones Trail (2.5 miles each way) → ends at Avila Valley Barn
🐐 Feed goats, take pony rides, grab ice cream or bakery treats
😴 Midday: Nap break back at hotel (suites make this easy)
🏖️ Afternoon: Beach + swings at Avila + maybe a sunset drink for parents

Stroller / Bike Note: Bob Jones Trail is paved, flat, and safe for kids on balance bikes, scooters, bike trailers, etc.

Pony Rides cost $10 per person

Day 3: Hotel Pool + Aquarium Stop Before Heading Home

Because checkout is usually 11am, we do:

✔️ Quick pool swim after breakfast
✔️ Walk to Central Coast Aquarium (small but interactive — kids can touch starfish + small sharks)
✔️ Drive home with tired, happy children ✅

🏨 Review: Avila Lighthouse Suites (Best Family Hotel in Avila Beach)

Why we love it:

  • All rooms are suites (nap-friendly, door-separating, not just a couch)

  • Free breakfast (waffle bar, eggs, fruit — not gourmet, but efficient)

  • Right on the beach, across from playground

  • Heated pool + hot tub

  • Outdoor fire pits + lawn games

  • Walkable to ice cream + restaurants

  • Tons of other kids = zero judgment for toddler chaos

We’ve stayed multiple times and would choose it again every trip.
